This short session is an easy way to get a taste of how the art and playfulness of improv can impact your life in a positive way. Students will get a 4-class sampling of the gifts that can come from improvising. Through enjoyable games and exercises, students who benefit from regular improv practice gain more confidence, creativity, and cognitive flexibility while exercising the basic improv skills of listening, reacting, collaborating with others, and trusting oneself. - Fall) Clay For Special Needs with KB
Join us for a fun clay hand building experience! In this class we will explore different ways to create fun and easy pottery pieces in a small group setting. We will finish our pieces with colorful ceramic glazes or acrylic paint. No experience necessary. Individuals should be able to follow simple verbal instructions in a group setting (2 instructors to 6 students).

This wet-on-wet oil painting is for all beginners. There is no need for drawing. No patterns you just need a canvas then you’re ready to create your world. Every time you paint you will find success! With a serious passion for painting, Jae specializes in landscape and floral oil paintings utilizing Bob Ross's painting techniques. Jae believes painting has the power to make you happy and she loves sharing that experience with others. Her technique is all about making you feel at ease and confident with your brushstrokes. Remember, there are no mistakes, only happy accidents! Jae is heavily inspired by the Bob Ross style of art that was immensely popular in the USA through the highly successful series "The Joy of Painting", which was hosted by Mr. Ross and ran on PBS from the 80's thru the early 90's. Bob Ross was a 20-year Air Force Sergeant who became a masterful art teacher and an expert in oil painting. He is also an iconic American, known and loved by millions. He continued to teach until his early passing in 1995. Jae Montano is passing on Bob Ross's artistic heritage while adding a personal touch and cultural flair to each brushstroke and each step of her artistic journey. She strived to perfect his style. She found that painting makes you happy. When she found that there was a program thru Bob Ross Inc. to get a certification as an instructor, she perused this and received her Certifications. Jae is now the only certified Bob Ross instructor in the Northern Georgia Area. She tries to inspire many others to follow in Bob Ross’s footsteps and try something new. So, if you’re ready to have fun, join Jae and others by attending a class and tap into the creative side that you never knew you had. - Fall) Basic Drawing Tuesday 10a-Noon
In this beginning to early-intermediate drawing course we work with a range of techniques and dry media. The class is designed as a series of sequential projects, building on fundamental drawing principles such as proportion, scale, value and perspective. Students are introduced to common media utilized to complete drawings. Students also gain understanding and knowledge of space, light and composition while learning to "see" in a manner that translates the subject into a drawing or painting. Supply List Graphite Pencils: 4B, 2B, HB, 2H, 4H and any others you would like to try Paper Blending Sticks, sometimes called tortillons, with sandpaper for sharpening them Kneaded Eraser Sketchbook with drawing paper, 9x12 Curriculum Breakdown: Week 1: Learning to make the mental shift into "perception mode" using blind contour drawing, upside down drawing, and using positive and negative shapes/spaces Week2: Value and shading - using a value scale and shading the four basic shapes (sphere, cone, cylinder, and cube) Week3: Still life with grid - use the grid technique to draw a small still-life and then shade it in (the example in the class description is a student drawing from this class) Week4: Figure drawing/ basic proportions of the body - using gesture drawing as a warm-up, and photos of athletes and dancers for reference Week5: Faces and features - drawing a face using proportional guidelines and tips to improve eyes, mouth, nose, hair, ears, and shading Week 6: Perspective - basics of one point perspective and how to show depth in drawings with buildings and interiors Week7: Pen and ink - Techniques of drawing with pen and ink, including hatching, cross hatching, stippling, and showing various textures and patterns Week 8: Animals - how to break down a sketch into simple basic shapes and how to draw fur, basic animal anatomy Example of student 'Basic Drawing' work below:
- The Figure in Clay with Mike Lalone
The Figure in Clay with Mike Lalone The focus of this class will be modeling the human figure in three dimensions. Learn the difference between armature and non-armature related construction. Students will approach the figure by building from the inside out. Muscles and skin are added as we build up fullness on the torso. Arms, legs and head will be modeled and added to the torso. After the figure is complete, we will hollow out overly thick areas to be able to fire the piece. Figures will be from 9 to 12 inches in size. Tools: Tools can range from professional sculpting tools to ga few basic loop and wood carving tools. No need for huge expense. Get a few loop tools for digging out clay, a skewer stick or two, popsicle sticks and we are on our way! This class is designed for students with previous pottery wheel experience. Students in this class will explore various forms, surfaces and techniques of throwing on the potters wheel. There will be projects assigned throughout the class, this is a great way for the experienced potter to expand their knowledge of clay. *Included in the price of your class is a 25lb bag of clay as well as 2.5 hours of open studio time per week, to be used immediately following your class. Students may purchase 1 additional bag of clay from The Art Center over the course of the session. For a total of 50lbs maximum per session. Tool kits must be purchased by students and are available at most Dick Blick and Michaels stores. *Upcharge for porcelain clay: 1st bag $20, 2nd bag $50. Porcelain clay can purchased online at check out (look for Add On option below the Booking Form) or through our online shop.
- Fall) Saturdays Mixed Media Grades 2-6
Mixed media for beginners is a fun introduction to painting and sculpting. This class will allow students to experiment with different materials and textures to help them discover and create exciting new material relationships. Students will be focusing on material study and we will have fun materials to experiment and play with daily. We will be exploring 2d and 3d art using materials like paper, air dry clay, newspapers/magazines, acrylics, charcoal, canvases and found objects. This class will also allow parents to stop by for any of the daily workshops for a small fee of $30 cash per class, please call ahead. Drop in fee to be paid directly to instructor upon arrival. Lesson Summary 1) Contour drawing (thumbnails) 2) Mask off (paper mache/clay masks) 3) Picasso animals (acrylic on paper) 4) Relief Portraits (3d pictures) 5) Toolboxes/jewelry boxes (carving and painting boxes) 6) Found object sculpture (incorporating found objects into your art) Includes all supplies.

Learn how to create fun, decorative, and functional clay projects! Students will explore fundamental clay skills like pinch, coil, and slab to build their own ceramic creations. They will then learn glazing and surface decorating techniques to finish off their one-of-a-kind creations! Projects differ week to week. Registration closes Friday, July 10th at noon (12PM).

Anime is a highly distinctive style of cartoon drawing which originated in Japan and enjoys immense worldwide popularity. Anime are the characters appearing in manga which are Japanese graphic novels and comic strips. There are a wide variety of manga appropriate for children through adult readers. Manga characters are instantly recognizable by their large eyes, highly stylized hair, fashionable clothing and overall expressive quality. Registration closes Friday, July 10th at noon (12PM).
